Last June, Eloqua published the first infographic on the then-nascent content marketing industry. We called it The Content Grid. The public seemed to like the visual. It earned six awards, sparked dozens of speaking engagements, and triggered a number of “how do you ____” calls from Fortune 500 companies.
What a difference a year makes.
Enter June 2011. The original infographic is already dated. Why? Because thanks to books like Content Rules by Ann Handley and CC Chapman, resources like The Content Marketing Institute, and blogs like Junta42 by Joe Pulizzi, content marketing is no longer a coltish teenager. It’s exiting its awkward years and verging on adulthood. You can tell a lot about an industry by the questions people ask about it. Today, fewer people ask, “How can I get started in content marketing?” and more probe, “How can I operationalize it?” These are good signs.
The Content Grid v2 picks up where its predecessor left off. Intact is the prescriptive connection between content type and distribution channel. New is the perspective of the buyer, a multi-stage purchase funnel, and a comprehensive collection of KPIs (like they say, “What isn’t measured, isn’t purchased.”). Although v2 contains significantly more information than the original, the new design is infinitely more simple. This achievement is a tribute to the unrivaled design team at JESS3 – and the clarity of client/agency communication that comes only with time and trust.
